Bio-CCS - Biological Carbon Capture and Storage.
Biosequestration offers global opportunity to draw down 'legacy' CO2 from the atmosphere at speed and at scale.

The benefits of treating CO2 as a productive feedstock are being realised by a group of companies brought together by Environment Business Australia under the banner of the Bio-CCS Group.

A number of projects involving a portfolio of technologies and changed management practices are being set up around Australia with the following benefits:

  • Helping to reduce concentrations of atmospheric CO2
  • Capture of CO2 from coal-fired power plants using rapidly growing strains of native algae
  • Production of biodiesel, animal meal and soil fertiliser
  • Improved agricultural productivity as soil carbon levels are rebuilt

The processes used are based on photosynthesis and biomimicry. They help reduce reliance on synthetic chemical fertilisers while rebuilding soil structure, biota and productivity. The biofuels from algae do not compete with the foodchain and as they are grown on recycled water they do not deplete soil minerals and nutrients.

Each step in the Bio-CCS process can be scaled up and replicated in many countries as well as Australia. And importantly all approaches are designed to be commercially viable.
