SBA benefactor member takes out prestigious environmental award14 March 2011Sustainable Business Australia (SBA) congratulates benefactor member Sinclair Knight Merz for being awarded the prestigious International Erosion Control Association’s (IECA) Environmental Excellence Award for 2010 as part of the Hume Highway Woomargama Alliance. The IECA award, won against strong global competition, is in recognition of an outstanding erosion and/or sediment control project, program, or system that demonstrates excellence in natural resource conservation and environmental protection. This prestigious accolade was awarded for the work by Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) as design and environmental management consultant, and Abigroup as construction contractor on the Hume Highway Woomargama Bypass Project in New South Wales. The project is being delivered by the Hume Highway Woomargama Alliance (HHWA), which consists of the New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), Abigroup and SKM. SBA Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Petersen said: "SBA applauds the progressive and innovative work of SKM on this project, where SKM and Abigroup developed new systems of water management, resource re-use and recycling, and for which they have received much deserved recognition by their peers." "A focus on incorporating the principles of sustainable development into the design, construction and maintenance activities of the construction industry will be a fundamental pre-requisite to economic growth while limiting adverse environmental costs, as well as building key skills for the future green economy", says Andrew Petersen. "The integration of sustainable principles in the Woomargama Bypass Project is another example of how SBA members are delivering the smart solutions to our economy, our society and our environment through innovation and a commitment to excellence" he said. About SKM SKM is a leading projects firm, with global capability in strategic consulting, design and delivery.
