Media releaseGlobal Renewables and Lend Lease win multi-billion dollar contract to tackle waste and greenhouse gas emissionsFebruary 2007The green credentials of Australian industry were given a significant boost today when it was announced that a major waste management contract in the UK would focus on recycling materials and embodied energy, trapping and destroying greenhouse gases, and producing a natural fertiliser from putrescible waste. Australian companies Global Renewables and Bovis Lend Lease were awarded the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) $5 billion (£2bn) contract by the Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council. It is one of the largest and most significant contracts of its kind in the UK and demonstrates the importance of resource management and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. Both companies are members of Environment Business Australia a peak industry organisation established to raise awareness about commercial solutions to environmental challenges. Quote John White How about this? "The. UK Government's decision to legislate a price on greenhouse emissions from landfilling of waste and to avoid the inevitable contamination of groundwater from leaking landfills has created a new-era sustainable industry that Global Renewables is ideally placed to lead, with Bovis Lend Lease. Australia should now implement the proven UK model, to replace landfilling of putrescible waste, to generate low cost carbon credits and to demonstrate Australia's clean green reputation. John "Lend Lease has an aspiration to become a sustainable organisation and this defines the way we do business and what business we do," said Maria Atkinson, Lend Lease Global Head of Sustainability. "With its aim of diverting waste from landfill through resource recovery and alternative waste technology processes, the Lancashire Waste Project reflects that aspiration and our commitment to walk the talk." Plus, if possible we would also like to suggest a quote from Bob Johnston, Global CEO, BLL: "This will be a first for Britain and a real step forward in the way that local authorities tackle the problem of waste handling and recycling. It's an exciting and far-sighted project to be involved in and it fits very well with our own sustainability goals," Bob Johnston, Global CEO of Bovis Lend Lease.
