So I've been thinking...
...about SBA being No. 1 at COP 18 in Doha, Qatar! It's extraordinary to think that with 205 countries, 180 exhibits and 7000 NGOs at COP18, SBA was allocated the No. 1 exhibit stand! And thanks to valued SBA member Hidro+, we can demonstrate that substance and innovation clearly come under the Sustainable Business Banner...

So I've been thinking...
...about the leadership and determination of the Purves Environmental Fund (PEF), in a year that saw the withdrawal of support for environmental programs by some state governments, following the "lead" of the federal opposition which reinforced its policy to abolish the carbon price.

The PEF is committed to initiatives to bring about better environmental outcomes and it is the major sponsor of The Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, as well as supporting the Australian Youth Climate Coalition's activities and improving the financial capacity of environmental NGOs, such as SBA, the Environment Centre NT and 1 Million Women.

The Purves Environmental Fund Annual Review 2012 has now been launched and is worth reading - click here.

So I've been thinking...
...how very appropriate that the 2012 CMI Personality of the Year Award has been presented to Freddy Sharpe, CEO of Climate Friendly. SBA warmly congratulates Freddy Sharpe on achieving such deserved recognition and we are proud that he is a committed and active member of SBA.

The Personality of the Year Award highlights the personalities that have achieved cut-through in and for the market with their passion and drive for the transition to a low-carbon world.

The judging panel said: "Freddy stands tall in the Australian and international carbon markets. As CEO of Climate Friendly, Freddy has built one of Australia's most successful and well recognised voluntary carbon offsetting companies."

"In doing so, he has combined his commitment to sustainability and the evolution of carbon markets, with a dash of panache. A truly charismatic character, Freddy's passion for his work is nothing short of infectious," said the judges.

So I've been thinking...
...about SBA's former CEO Fiona Wain, who passed away this week after a long illness. Fiona was SBA's CEO for 10 years, at a time when few were willing to speak out for their beliefs. She was a tireless campaigner for sustainable and environmentally-friendly business and was widely recognised for promoting SBA under its former name, Environment Business Australia.

So I've been thinking...
...about strategies for spreading the word about sustainable businesses associated with infrastructure, like SBA's newest Benefactor member Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure. And I've also been thinking about the definite value of the UpSide video series, in which Katerina Kimmorley has focused on many sustainability issues that the UK and Australia have in common. We hope Katerina will continue the series next year and SBA has been glad to promote those issues and extend the reach of the UpSide to our members and visitors.

This week, in the final episode of the UpSide, Professor Julia King unveils the future of green transport in the UK and Australia.

So I've been thinking...
...about the Australian Government's retreat this week from plans to buy dirty brown coal power stations in Victoria because of unsuccessful price negotiations, and the importance of price competitiveness in the marketplace. And this week on the Upside, Simon Baptist from Vivid Economics reveals how AUstralia can boost its low carbon competitiveness.

CEO News

So I've been thinking...
...about the Australian government's welcome announcement on linking Australia's emissions trading scheme to the EU's ETS, bringing closer a new inter-linked international carbon market that will impose a unified carbon price on key markets.

And after a week of changes to the carbon price, this week in the 10th episode of the UpSide, Damien Morris provides some timely insights into how NGO's can police carbon pricing schemes.

To build on this success, The UpSide series of interviews with UK experts in sustainability will help pave the way for new ideas and avenues for Australian sustainability leadership into the future.
